The Liberal Democrats

The Liberal Democrats is a socially and economically liberal party, which believes in creating a free, fair and open society, in which no one is enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.
Our values are what create and guide our policy and ideas. We believe in supporting those who need help most, whilst restricting government interference where it achieves nothing useful.

Some of our proposals for creating a different, better future are:

A New, Fairer Society
The Education system in this country still lets many people down. We would cut class sizes, introduce a new pupil premium to help the poorest in our society, and scrap tuition fees for everyone. We would slim down the National Curriculum, allowing teachers to be creative and prevent pupils getting bored.
Many families are being hit hard by the recession, so we would cut taxes for low and middle income families, paid for by closing loopholes and making sure that polluters and the wealthy pay their fair share.

Liberal Democrats are strong supporters of the NHS, though some changes are needed. We would end Government meddling, cut back on expensive waste such as IT systems that don’t work, and introduce a guarantee of treatment within a time limit.

A New, Sustainable Economy
The Liberal Democrats campaigned on The Environment long before the other Westminster parties, and we still have the strongest proposals. We would say no to Nuclear, because it soaks up money that would be better spent on renewable energy. We are the only party to aim for a Zero-Carbon Britain by 2050, where we absorb as much carbon as we emit.

We would create new jobs, particularly in work linked to creating a greener country, and bring forward public spending on affordable homes, renewable energy and insulating homes, schools and hospitals. We will also fund the training costs of apprenticeships, enabling more people to train and retrain in new skills.

We have campaigned for new regulations to make sure the banking crisis does not repeat itself. We would outlaw the bonus culture that tempted so many bankers to take huge risks, stop banks dodging British taxes, and make sure that the government owned banks continue to lend money to British businesses.

The rail network in Britain is a national embarrassment. We would launch a massive scheme of new stations, new lines and better service. We would invest in a high-speed rail network, with the aim of cutting journey times all the way from London to Scotland. Other public transport such as Buses would also benefit from additional resources, whilst we strongly oppose the third runway at Heathrow.

A New, Clean Politics
We would introduce the right to sack your MP if they are found guilty of committing a serious offence. The House of Lords would be made an elected body, similar to the US system. Individual donations to political parties would be capped, to make sure that money doesn’t buy election results.

No Liberal Democrat MP was found to have fiddled the Expenses System, but we still believe that the rules should be made a lot tighter, and punish those who make money at the expense of the public.
We believe that local people and local politicians often know better than the ministers in London, so would make sure that more decisions are made locally. We would make sure that local people have a real say in their NHS and policing services, particularly as hospitals are often closed against huge public protest.
